Cutters & Intervention Tools
Over the last 10 years Edge has been steadfastly working on numerous next generation electromechanical cutters that are today used by many of the service companies, both large and small, that dominate the logging and intervention sector.
More reliable and easier to run, these third generation cutting tools utilise Edge Energy’s unrivalled high-speed telemetry and tool bus to give unprecedented control and instrumented feedback to ensure the best possible cut in all scenarios . Blades and cutting techniques replicate those used in state-of-the-art machine shops, ensuring precision cuts in almost any material and under extreme states of compression, tension, pressure and temperature. The modular deployment platform delivers a flexible cutting head able to sever a wide range of tubulars including tubing, drill-pipe and other completion hardware. This means Edge is able to utilise a small range of tools to cover almost any cutting application, minimising the need for a large and costly cutter inventory.

Beyond our existing modular cutters and electromechanical products, we are very willing to work on unique or bespoke solutions to meet our clients' specific needs. These potential solutions are diverse and could include the development of explosive-free deployment systems to set punch tubing or set plug and packers for well abandonment or water shut off. Edge is also capable of building positioning and orientation systems for millimetre accurate axial and rotational deployment of gun systems or high-resolution sensors which simply cannot be positioned by logging cable deployment alone.
The current Edge cutter range is optimised to cut 4 1/2" and 5 1/2" tubing with an OD of 3 1/8" and a maximum cut diameter of 6". Larger sizes are available on request. Using an advanced epicyclic cutting technique, the tool cuts more reliably under compression than older style sweeping blade cutters which are prone to blade trapping at the end of the cut. Our cutter only makes a single circumferential pass of the pipe and the tool can be programmed to cut a series of small precision slots in the tubular giving similar functionality to a puncher. All our smart intervention tools are fully instrumented, giving real time monitoring of the operation progress and success via the Edge surface control software. The Edge cutting tools run on our telemetry and bus and are fully combinable with GR and CCL to give industry-standard depth control of the cut or other operation.
